LETTER TO ALL PARENTS:

St Augustines Scout & Guide Headquarters

SJF’

St John Fisher, 56 Begbrook Park, Frenchay, Bristol, BS16 1NF

42nd Kingswood Scouts                                                                                 23rd Kingswood Guides

We are on the move to SJF

Dear Parents

You may well remember that at our AGM last May we announced that Fr Frank has very kindly offered us the use of St John Fisher in Frenchay as our scout & guide headquarters and for us to hold our weekly unit meetings there. After explaining some of the reasons why the move was being considered, the response we received from you as parents was favourable towards it.

However, before it could take place, it was dependent on a certain things happening & this has taken some time to achieve.

Some structural changes to the building itself were required.

We needed to obtain & install suitable storage capacity for each unit.

We needed to meet & inform the neighbours of St John Fisher of what was being proposed.

These things have now been completed & in particular I am pleased to report that the neighbours on the whole are favourable towards us using St John Fisher.

So the move can now take place – and so it is our intention to actually move in during the week of the school holiday in February and that consequently commencing from week beginning

Monday 20th February unit meetings from then on will be held in St John Fisher in Frenchay.

What does this mean to St Augustine’s?

First & foremost, the units are still very much part of St Augustine’s parish. Monthly church parades will still take place & there will be times when unit events will take place at St Augustine’s. The relocation to St John Fisher is purely a practical issue for the weekly meetings as it offers us opportunities which at the moment are restricted to us at St Augustine’s.

Like in any move, I am sure there will be some teething troubles but please bear with us whilst we settle in.

We hope that you approve of this move but if you do have any specific queries, please refer them direct to your unit leaders.

Yours in Scouting & Guiding

Graham Williams – Group Scout Leader on behalf of all the Leaders

Beavers

Beavers have commenced hobbies and my faith badges, learning how to tie reef knots and fold neckerchiefs.  Other activities have included hand hygiene and a games night.

Cubs

Cubs are currently working towards map readers and road safety badges by plotting routes to discover hidden treasure, learning to recognise road signs and map symbols and building 3D model of contour lines.  Sixers and seconders are planning a camp, calculating costs, identifying equipment required and including a hike.

Scouts

Scouts have held a patrol challenge night, completed a great egg race, wide games with walkie talkies, held a casino night and visited the climbing wall.  Four members competing in the Ten Tors bronze route (35 miles) hike with the District.

Brownies

All 24 girls have completed their Brownie skills badge.  Activities included learning to address envelopes correctly, clean teeth and wash hands, pack luggage for different holidays and assemble a healthy packed lunch.  The young leader is running a t-shirt painting evening and next week girls will be meeting at St.John Fisher, where parents have been invited to familiarise themselves with facilities.

Guides

Guides have started the Diamond jubilee badge, designing and making a felt pennant to represent their patrols.  Other activities have included a ready steady cook and fair trade evening.

St. John Fisher

Feedback from parents largely positive, although some are unable to attend at the new location.

Move to be completed prior or during term break w/c 13/2.

Keys will be issued to each leader, the quarter master, GSL and committee chair.  All will need to sign for keys and no further copies can be made.  The committee will fund the cost of nine sets of keys, Dave/Deacon Peter will arrange copies.

Leaders to clear unit shelves before 16/2.  Group items will be moved by those available on 16/2 meet 10am at the school.

Dave will dismantle shelves and move to SJF, together with steps (space permitting).  Six lightweight tables also required.

Items to note:

·        Weekly mass held 09:30-10:00 every Wednesday.

·        Units will cover evacuation procedures and fire drills during meetings at SJF.  Fire exit door will need to be unlocked and unbolted from the inside at the start of each session.

·        No items are to be stored in the Vestment room.

·        On leaving, each leader should remove rubbish, switch off lights and lock the main door.  Do not touch the heating as this remains on permanently.

·        Cleaning will be the responsibility of the Units, materials and equipment are available in the broom cupboard.

Outstanding items for assessment once move complete:

·        Outside lighting - gate should be closed during unit session if children are outside.  Path and car park area may require demarcation.

·        Kitchen equipment – second-hand fridge/freezer and cooker may be available.

·        External storage – subject to planning permission, but gas bottles will almost certainly require a lockable cage separate from the building.

·        Meeting times/days – any changes to be discussed by Unit leaders and implemented at a later date.

Challenge 2012

Paula outlined Phil Packer’s walking challenge which will be launched 24/01/12.  The plan is for youth organisations to involve themselves in collectively walking 2000 miles in 6 months.  Paula will bring further detail once available, in the interim all to keep a record of miles walked.  The group agreed there is potential to get the children involved not just in walking, but fundraising, designing badges/totals chart and exploring our new SJF base area.

Future Events

·        Diamond jubilee tea party (26/05/12) at SJF, children to invite local residents.

·        Summer event, ‘Celebrating Britain’ (30/06/12),   Leaders running BBQ (pork roast & apple sauce).  Panning for diamonds, coconut shy and stock equipment required.

·        Christmas bazaar (01/12/12), Leaders will swap to run refreshment stall.
